Setting the Stage for Screen-Free Family Living
In a world inundated with screens and digital devices, the idea of embracing a screen-free lifestyle might seem challenging, especially for families. However, it’s a shift that many have found not only beneficial but transformative. If you’re a parent or a part of a family seeking the simplicity of a screen-free existence, you’re not alone. This year this was us, slowly finding ourselves relying on screens more than we had done in the past, and listening to a couple of podcasts about going screen-free, we decided to take the leap. It’s been so successful I wanted to share with you why it might be the right choice for your family too.
I dive into this topic in detail in podcast episode 62 of The Slow Living Collective Podcast.

The Benefits of Going Screen-Free
Improved Play and Behavior: Our Journey to Realisation
For many families, the decision to go screen-free comes after a realisation of how detrimental excessive screen time can be. This revelation often surfaces in the form of improved play and behaviour. In our journey, we discovered that our children’s behavior and the quality of their play drastically improved after we implemented screen-free living.
Excessive screen time in children can have several negative impacts. First and foremost, it can lead to physical health issues, such as digital eye strain, disrupted sleep patterns, and a sedentary lifestyle. Additionally, extended screen use may hinder the development of essential social and communication skills, as face-to-face interactions are often replaced by virtual ones. The constant exposure to screens, particularly on social media, can also contribute to feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem in children. Furthermore, excessive screen time may limit a child’s creativity and imagination, as passive consumption of content can overshadow active play and exploration.
Health and Wellbeing Benefits for the Whole Family
Screen-free living isn’t just about reducing digital eye strain or improving posture; it’s about the overall health and wellbeing of the family. Reduced screen time can lead to more physical activity, better sleep, and increased quality time together. The benefits extend to parents and children alike, enhancing both physical and mental health.
But for us the real kicker was the blue light. The blue light emitted by screens, such as those on computers, smartphones, and tablets, can have adverse effects on our health and well-being. Prolonged exposure to blue light, especially during nighttime screen use, can disrupt our natural circadian rhythm, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, ultimately leading to sleep disturbances and potential sleep disorders.
Studies suggest that long-term exposure to blue light may contribute to an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration, as it can damage the light-sensitive cells in the retina. Therefore, it’s essential to be mindful of our screen time and consider using blue light filters or reducing screen usage in the evenings to mitigate these negative effects.
The Challenges of Unplugging
Navigating the Digital Landscape: Common Hurdles
But it’s not easy it. Phone and device usage is now so ingrained in ourlives that unplugging from screens in a world so deeply entwined with technology can present challenges, for both adults and children. Common hurdles include the allure of screens, resistance from children, and finding alternatives to screen-based activities.
Strategies for Overcoming Screen-Time Challenges
To successfully unplug, it’s essential to develop strategies for overcoming screen-time challenges. Setting clear boundaries, creating screen-free zones within the home, and offering alternative activities are all effective ways to navigate the digital landscape. Consistency in enforcing screen-time rules is key to success.
Practical Tips for Screen-Free Family Living
So how did we do it? Well, we accidently went cold turkey and never looked back! In the middle of a living room renovation we removed the TV and it just never went back. We realised that nobody missed it, that the kids were deep in play, and that we’d seemingly broken the connection whereby they always asked for TV.
Now I am not suggesting this will work for everyone, but it might certainly be worth a try. If it doesn’t work though, here are some other tips to help you out.
Creating a Screen-Free Home Environment
Transforming your home into a screen-free haven is a crucial step. This can involve designating specific areas as screen-free zones, setting screen-time limits, and removing digital devices from bedrooms. It’s essential to establish an environment that supports your screen-free lifestyle.
Engaging Activities and Alternatives
To make screen-free living enjoyable for everyone, you’ll want to have a repertoire of engaging activities and alternatives on hand. These can include board games, outdoor adventures, reading, crafting, and exploring new hobbies as a family.
Setting Boundaries and Consistency with Screen Time
Setting boundaries and being consistent with screen time is vital for a successful transition to screen-free living. Create a daily or weekly schedule that outlines designated screen time for educational purposes, and stick to it. Consistency will help children understand and accept the new routine.
Screen-Free Living with Children
Encouraging Children to Embrace Unplugged Time
Encouraging children to embrace unplugged time might take some adjustment (or it might not!). Begin by explaining the benefits of screen-free living and involving them in the decision-making process. Make screen-free time fun by offering a variety of activities and experiences.
Balancing Screen Time with Educational Content
While screen-free living is the goal, it’s also important to strike a balance. Some screen time, when used for educational content, can be beneficial. Be discerning in your choices and ensure that screen time aligns with your family’s values.
Finding Joy in Screen-Free Moments
The true essence of screen-free living lies in finding joy in the moments that don’t involve screens. Encourage your family to relish in these moments, whether it’s a family meal, a hike in nature, or a cozy evening with books and board games.
Embracing slow and simple living through screen-free family time can bring about a sense of togetherness, peace, and balance. While the transition may present its challenges, the benefits are immeasurable. By reducing screen time, you create space for authentic, mindful moments of connection that make family life truly special.
